Stress Simulation in a Pulley and a Power Block for Vessels

HPC-Competence Center

Galician Supercomputing Center (CESGA) is a public HPC Center; bringing HPC, High bandwidth communications, storage, and advanced services to the Galician research community, Galician university academic system, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and industry, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs). It aims to contribute to the advancement of science and technology, through research and application of HPC and other information technology resources for the benefit of society as a whole.

The Enterprise

Industrias Ferri S.A. was founded in 1964 by Ricardo Fernández Villar. After serving on fishing boats, he decided to set up a workshop in the basement of his father’s house to improve or manufacture products, the origin of what is now Industrias Ferri, S.A. Ferri has specialized in making equipment for all kinds of vessels, complying with the most rigorous requirements of performance and reliability, confirming its fame as an innovative manufacturer of high quality products. During the seventies, their experience grew considerably so they became able to satisfy the increasing demand for deck equipment and auxiliary machinery. In 1984, they entered the industry of drilling equipment for ornamental mining.

How HPC makes the difference

Ferri Industries wanted to analyse both the pulley and the power block in a separate way. The first analysis used a FEM (Finite Element Method) model for the pulley, the second project focused on the mechanical analysis of stress and deformations in the power block used in vessels, with aim to identify critical areas in order to redesign it partially or completely. Applying HPC made it possible to deliver and meet the client’s technical expectations all at a lower cost, while at the same time enabling effective technology transfer, through passing HPC expertise onto the client. Industrias Ferri CEO Patricio Fernández stated that CESGAs HPC infrastructure and expertise have delivered exactly what they’re looking for in terms of quality and professional services, and that they are very important to help drive the local SME based ecosystem.
