Description:
IICT-BAS has extensive expertise in mathematical modelling and advanced computing. After the acquisition of the new supercomputer system “Avitohol” (332th in the top500 list in June 2015) the need arose to adapt and port applications and scientific codes that were initially developed either for clusters or for the Blue Gene/P supercomputer that was used before. Since 90% of the computational power of Avitohol comes from the Xeon Phi coprocessors, it is essential to make full use of their capabilities.
Impact:
  • Some applications could make use of the coprocessors with little additional effort
  • Strategies, tools and techniques to improve the efficiency of using the accelerators weredeveloped and tested.
  • The proper utilization of vectorization and hybrid MPI/OpenMP programming offers substantialadvantages in terms of speed and energy use.
  • The same approaches are effective for the codes that are used when working with SMEs.
