Topic: Assessing the potential of SMEs to adopt HPC services in cloud
Speaker: Tomi Ilijas (Arctur)

Category of Best Practice: SME engagement
All HPC Centres encounter difficulties engaging new SMEs and involving them in HPC related technologies: and from a large pool of SMEs, it is very difficult and complex to identify which have the best potential to adopt HPC and Cloud services. On the bases of surveys it was found out that most SMEs are not aware of the HPC potential and thus see little benefit in it. The survey design has been improved in a way that the results of the modified questionnaire can be used as entry data for the HPC4SME Tool. This innovative approach, invented by Arctur, is based on a qualitative multi-attribute decision model, which can support both HPC providers and SMEs in assessing the potential of the SMEs to use HPC in Cloud. This method will help HPC centres and other stakeholders (e.g. chambers of commerce, local government and economic development agencies) to identify SMEs with potential, engage them in innovation funding schemes and stimulate the adoption of cloud HPC services.
Innovative assessment approach has many benefits for SMEs: Each SME will get a structured assessment with easy to understand results and recommendations on how to develop andexploit their potential to use HPC related technologies. Sesame Net and Network members will be able to deploy this more widely, and directly provide added value to SMEs.
