There are two basic types of ball grinding systems: open circuit and closed circuit. In the open circuit system, the mill product has the fineness required for the next stage of the process. In the closed-circuit system, the mill product is classified in a separator in a fine fraction that is then taken to the next stage, and a thick fraction that is returned to the mill for subsequent milling.

The cement mill

Cement clinker is usually ground using a ball mill. This is essentially a large rotating drum containing grinding media - normally steel balls. As the drum rotates, the motion of the balls crushes the clinker. The drum rotates approximately once every couple of seconds.
